Dracaena

A massive family of color, variegation, and stunning foliage, Dracaenas are the go-to for easy care and air purification. They land on N.A.S.A’s top ten air-purifying houseplants, and also on most lists for low-light and drought tolerance.

Native from areas all over the world, Dracaenas are a great option for office light or spaces with darker corners, varieties like the Janet Craig and Lisa Cane provide tall, leafy greenery and thrive on neglect. One with a textured spikey nature, like a Marginata, tends to enjoy bright light situations and being root-bound. Warneckii Dracaenas add variegation that many low-light plants don’t offer. Mass Canes are another great option for taller plants, whereas Limelights and Song of Indias stay on the bushier side. There are so many benefits to a Dracaena and many to explore.

Best to keep away from pets, Dracaenas want to get exceptionally dry before being watered well. Depending on the light, this can be a couple of weeks to a couple of months in between waterings. Be sure to touch the soil a few inches deep, or use a moisture meter to determine that the plant is dry and ready.

Light:

Low to Bright light. Prefers indirect but some varieties, like Marginatas, can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight.

Water:

Allow soil to mostly dry out, then water thoroughly.
