Cast Iron

Cast Iron plants are named for attaining the same hardiness as a cast iron pan. Also known as Aspidistra, these plants can tolerant many conditions including low lighting and inconsistent watering.

Native to Japan and Taiwan, they have an interesting history of being one of the “first” houseplants, dated all the way back to Victorian era were it was used to show signs of wealth in homes and parlors. This plant survived the noxious gas lighting at the time, as well as irregular watering, watering with alcohol, and extremely dark rooms that would certainly damage an average houseplant. On top of that, they are pet friendly!

Bright indirect to moderate to low light

Water:

Let top of soil dry between waterings. Can tolerate going fully dry between waterings.
