Cactus/Succulent

Cactaceae

Cacti have spikes to protect it from thirsty desert animals, because they hold water in their stems and roots for long periods of time. They are very drought tolerant and adaptable to neglect. Some cacti are great at taking a lower-light windowsill, but most prefer the sunniest spot in the house aka a south or west facing window.

Succulents go hand in spiky hand with their cactus comrades. The word “succulent” quite literally means “full of juice,” and that is what any succulent does. It absorbs water into their leaves in order to store the hydration for the prolonged periods they like being dry. If the leaves are slightly squishy or wrinkly, they’re using up the reservoir. If the leaves firm, they are good to go!
